GOF Design Patterns help to make solutions communicable as they provide shared language and concepts.
When your OO design needs to be implemented, then an OO language provides the most direct mapping. The strongly typed procedural sequential and synchronous nature of Java is sometimes a pain but a few classes (TreeSet, FutureTask,PriorityBlockingQueue) and design patterns (Whiteboard) can usually make it tolerable to overcome. I am investigating other languages such as Scala and computing models such as ROC (NetKernel) and deployment modules (OSGI)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12869304419168175041noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5400765672405463592.post-80694423315838574692014-05-06T06:37:21.163+01:002014-05-06T06:37:21.163+01:00Scala is really a nice language and I will love to...Scala is really a nice language and I will love to see it as a platform like Java in near future. I would ...Yes, that's an interesting challenge. I would certainly consider some form of dedicated non-BDD tests for exercising the UI as I've always found capturing these sort of interactions difficult in a BDD style. What you absolutely want to avoid is ending up with some form of BDD scenario that reads like a user interaction script. E.g.:

Given I select the File -> New menu option
And I select the Fast Templates option
When I pick Invoice from the dropdown list
And click the OK button
Then a new Invoice document is displayed

This is a really bad idea and results in BDD scenarios that are really fragile and difficult to maintain. I've seen this attempted on a couple of projects and it never worked. It's far better to capture this sort of sequence of interactions in a more traditional test.

You can then if you wish encapsulate these interactions into a BDD scenario to write some higher level business tests, something like:

Given I have created a new Invoice document
When I add a item '12345' to the Invoice
Then the Invoice total is updated to be '£159.99'
Chris Turner (he/him)https://www.blogger.com/profile/09141108967081921802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5400765672405463592.post-32468414483388438132013-12-09T03:21:01.539+00:002013-12-09T03:21:01.539+00:00Anyone transitioning to Scala and not going throug...Anyone transitioning to Scala and not going through the FP Coursera course is making things hard on themselves and extending their learning curve unnecessarily. However, I have a Windows desktop application, build from MFC, that I am exploring options to automate/test and drive some development. I like the idea of BDD, however I guess I am a bit concerned as to having proper coverage on UI and Business logic through BDD scenarios.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5400765672405463592.post-56236997836628709332013-12-04T13:15:16.548+00:002013-12-04T13:15:16.548+00:00I certainly agree that the level of topics is one ...I certainly agree that the level of topics is one up from the last year- there's more bleeding-edge and advanced stuff, but balanced with case studies from the industry.

I definitely agree that the Scala newbies might have felt in the wrong place, at least initially. At least that was my impression when I overheard someone complain that they don't understand anything from Simon Peyton-Jones' keynote about lenses. It was a very challenging talk and Simon is a very entertaining and energetic speaker, but maybe some justification for going through all these hoops was necessary- see, Haskell cannot mutate state (at least not uncontrollably), and there are some benefits, e.g. for concurrent programs, etc., etc. Also there were some tweets wondering why a Scala conference starts with Haskell- is it because Scala wants to be Haskell? Is this where it should be going? Maybe some of these concerns should be addressed so newbies can feel at home. I feel Viktor's talk was much better as a starting keynote- it was entertaining and addressed a very fundamental aspect of computation. All in all it provided a compelling justification of why reactive (and why functional).

According to Wendy (SkillsMatters' CEO), there have been about 3 times as many attendees this year compared to last year- amazing! So yes, Scala is growing- and maturing. There must be something it's doing right (I believe it is), and the community can only win when new people join and share their perspective.Vassil Dichevhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14522675986593535178noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5400765672405463592.post-76457375828087404072013-11-22T09:00:36.529+00:002013-11-22T09:00:36.529+00:00Most recently I've been building RESTful http ...Most recently I've been building RESTful http apps with single page webapp clients written in Javascript.I've been writing my BDD tests against the RESTful interface to the service and then just using ordinary unit testing for the Javascript app.

In a more traditional MVC app my leaning is very much toward writing the BDD tests against the service layer. I've found that this stops business logic escaping into the controllers. These controllers can then be responsible for just orchestrating service calls and passing data to the view.

I have tried BDD testing at the UI layer using a combination of Cucumber and Selenium. I found this a very poor way to work as the specifications became more about how to drive the website rather than testing business logic and behaviour. They also became very fragile as the page flow evolved and changed. I'd strong recommend against doing BDD at the user interface level.Chris Turner (he/him)https://www.blogger.com/profile/09141108967081921802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5400765672405463592.post-29205709215251179412013-11-21T19:19:04.895+00:002013-11-21T19:19:04.895+00:00Any updates on how you went about this?Any updates on how you went about this?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
